Our Verdict on Dining in Malta

Malta's restaurant scene has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past decade. What was once a destination known primarily for tourist-trap pasta and pizza has evolved into a genuinely exciting culinary landscape, anchored by seven Michelin-starred restaurants and a growing cohort of independent chefs cooking with real ambition.

The sweet spot for value lies in the €€€ tier — restaurants like ION Harbour, De Mondion, and Le GV offer tasting-menu experiences that would cost two to three times more in London or Paris. For casual dining, Valletta's side streets and the Birgu waterfront hide some of the island's most characterful neighbourhood restaurants.

Our advice: book Michelin-starred restaurants at least two weeks in advance in summer, arrive hungry at the fine dining tier (portions are generous), and don't overlook Gozo — some of Malta's most authentic and memorable meals are found across the channel.
