Our Review of Grain Street, Valletta

Food at Grain Street: 15/20

This is the junior restaurant to the highly priced “Under Grain” which we are saving up to review. The idea that this is street food would be a little far fetched, at least in pricing terms, but the cooking is good. Lots of unusual dishes with extremely long descriptions. This is certainly a menu you get hungry reading, not least because it takes so long. Amongst the street snacks if adventurous you should try the crispy pigs ears, mustard & tarragon mayo, at €6 each. Otherwise, there is a ‘Lasagnette fritti’ mozzarella di bufala at €8, a Mimolette (French cheese) and candied walnut beignet at €7, ‘B & W’ Black ink and white fish beignet, at €8 each. I’d recommend the Lasagne ‘nera’ with calamari, squid ink and Nduja at €19. There is also a the confit/BBQ of local pumpkin with a fricassée of mussels and Lardo di Colonnata and a pumpkin seaweed emulsion at €18 (see what I mean about long descriptions). There is a Linguini 'Gentile selection', cacio e pepe with pistachios & lemon at €18 and an Acquerello risotto with confit Jerusalem artichokes & Alsace bacon for €20. Meat dishes are more pricey. A Cutlet of local pork , plums, smoked trout and roe emulsion is €32, while a grilled rib-eye of grain-fed Black Angus beef (aged 90 days), roquefort butter, green peppercorn sauce is €35.

Atmosphere at Grain Street: 7/10

Situated at street level, this is a popular destination for visitors. It tends to be on the quieter side. Décor is modern and a little stark. This is not the place for padded luxury.

Service at Grain Street: 7/10

Service is generally good, though we have had a few linguistic challenges. They will try to bully you into sharing dishes, but there really is no need. When it comes to the wine, don’t worry this is definitely not a street eating approach. There is a ‘Sommelier Wine Experience’ at €35 Per Person, and otherwise access to a capacious if highly priced wine list.
