From Gozo to Valletta
Born in Sannat, Gozo, Stephen Cordina discovered his extraordinary sense of smell at an early age. What began as an instinctive connection to the scents of his father's vegetable fields and the village festa fireworks became a lifelong vocation.
After moving to Malta in his twenties, he trained in Clinical Aromatherapy, Reflexology and Cosmetic Science in London and Switzerland. He was accredited as an aromatherapist by the Swiss Federation of Therapists and became the only Maltese perfumer recognised by the Société Française des Parfumeurs, whose membership is limited to a couple of hundred worldwide.
In 2005, he established Stephen Cordina Aroma & Therapy, opening his production facility at the Kordin Industrial Estate. His flagship store and atelier opened in the vaulted undercroft of the Ursuline Sisters' cloister in Valletta, a 300m² space that was once used by the nuns to distil orange blossom water, a tradition Stephen continues with his Aqua di Valletta fragrance.
Today, his team hand-makes over 30 products inspired by Malta's places, history and atmosphere. Each scent tells a story, from the plague-preventative resins of the Mdina fragrance to the jasmine, oud and grapefruit notes of Valletta's merchant past.
