Our Review of Tora, Sliema
Food at Tora: 15/20
There is a sad lack of high quality Chinese restaurants in Malta of the standard visitors travellers to London, New York and Hong Kong are familiar with. So Tora is a true God send, this is the closest you will get with some very high quality cooking provided you navigate carefully. For example the good Dim Sum are the individual ones freshly prepared like Spinach Dumplings with chestnut at € 9.50, Har Gao Prawn Dumpling with Bamboo Pith ‘the Tora Way’ at € 11.90, Mushroom Truffle Dumplings at € 12.50, Siu Mai at € 12.50, Chicken & Chive Dumplings at € 10.90 or Wild Seabass & Prawn Dumplings at € 11.90. Amongst the good starters are Stir-Fried King Prawns & Cashew, the Lemon Crispy Chicken at € 18.90 , or the Black Cod at € 38.90. Sides are good like Sichuanese Aubergine & Coconut Crumb € 13.00 even if a little on the spicy side. People come here for the duck. You must try the Chefs Signature Roasting Half Peking Duck (G) € 55.00 (Crispy Peking Duck, pancakes, truffle foie gras sauce) or the Black Truffle ‘Pi Pa’ Duck at € 32.00 (Half Roasted Duck, Winter Truffle, Coriander, Pi Pa Sauce.
Atmosphere at Tora: 9/10
Possibly the best view in Malta from the terrace, simply breathtaking. Though be aware you may require hat, sunglasses and sunblock certain times of year. There is background music of the chilled hip variety, together with a DJ by the swimming pool outside, so this is not a place to bring granny. The crowd tends toward the well healed younger side, and can be quite glamorous, with a mix of visitors and locals.
Service at Tora: 8/10
The guys here are great. They are swift, friendly and efficient and make good recommendations. The cocktails here are very good if on the pricey side, with some of them being very inventive and of course “grammable.” The cheeky sommelier will stir you towards the better wines. There’s a decent Chablis for €47, and an outstanding Grand Cru (les Clos) for €195. Amongst the reds Crozes Hermitages is only € 38.90, there is a good Chateauneuf du Pape for €78 and a delicious cote rotie for €155. If pushing the boat out this is probably the best place to drink Alter Ego at €245.
