Casa Bonavita Malta: Mediterranean in Attard

Our Review of Casa Bonavita, Attard
Food at Casa Bonavita: 15/20
This chic eighteenth century palace in Attard has rooms at sky high prices, I'm told the best suite is €2,000. That's a night. So with no money left for a cab the glitterati no doubt want to dine at home - this is the premise. Whilst the menu here is dedicated to a "contemporary take on Mediterranean cuisine" (again) - the reality is upmarket comfort food of the kind you find in the best corners of the Upper East Side or in St. James's London. Think Wilton's. It is well executed and uses the best produce. The menu is limited, with just three starters – Green asparagus, or seabass carpaccio both at €28, or Mozzarella at €25. So we plumped for a risotto from the mains list – champagne, of course, indeed Pol Roger no less, Winston Churchill's favourite - it was priced at €31. Other main courses include seabass with beurre blanc at €35, a near perfect rack of lamb at €42, and a Ribeye at €47. Sides come at €12. Overall that cab fare doesn't stretch far.
Atmosphere at Casa Bonavita: 9/10
Walking through the front door is entering a dream world. This is the hottest ticket this summer for the Malta smart set, and you soon understand why. Everything is beautifully done in pastel colours, with floral frescoes and lots of uber subtle (i.e. dark) lighting, which is helpful when confronted with the check. The small gardens are divine. The creators – Suzanne and Christopher Sharp – met on the London Tube in the 80's and went on to found the Rug Company. They know a thing or two about living well, and it is wonderful to have a slice of this here. It is hell getting a table as only four are available to those not staying in the hotel, and when you get here after much begging and bribing, you may be frustrated to find it empty. I guess a lot of the hotel guests dine in their rooms after all. There is no published telephone number, so book online well in advance. Still that makes this is the perfect place for a romantic dinner. The 'crowd', or rather the 'pampered few' are a mix of rich locals and hotel guests.
Service at Casa Bonavita: 8/10
Nanny knows best – the service is firm and professional. A blessing for those who are tired of hearing their waiter's life story and personal opinions on everything. In such a smart place, the wine list is of course a struggle price wise for locals, if not cosmopolitans, but like so much here it is small and perfectly formed. One weird thing though is it doesn't list the vintages. There are the usual cheapo Italians for those watching their pennies, for the rest a Domaine Pattes Loup Chablis for €115, and a Meursault is €250. The Spanish PSI is a good bet amongst the reds at €89, as the French reds are London prices. Pape Clement Grand Cru is €360!
