Food at Kuya Asian Pub: 14/20
“Eat like an Asian” is the motto, and you will. Lots of starters are the trick here, and they are well priced. Green dragon gai lan (wok tossed Chinese broccoli in soy sauce) at €7.25, Maltese sausage yakitori at €7.50, steamed prawn dim sum at €7.50, a Vietnamese noodle salad at €7.25. There’s more - Japanese chicken gyoza at €7.00, pork belly bao buns at €7.50, steamed vegetable dumplings at €6.00, a fabulous sweet lemon popcorn shrimp at €8.50, and the famous Takoyaki at €7.25 (octopus balls with Japanese mayo). The Thai style fish cakes at €9.25 are more rice than fish, the Tori Karaage (Japanese crispy fried chicken) at €9.00 is better. Main course are mainly €17 – 20 and usually feature a protein and rice or noodles.
Atmosphere at Kuya Asian Pub: 7/10
Don’t be put off by the name, this is not a pub. Rather it brings back memories of some of the more informal restaurants to be found in south East Asia. There are two levels, downstairs is more sedate, while upstairs on the roof, only open April to November, has a party atmosphere. It is open at the sides overlooking the busy streets of St. Julian’s. The crowd is mainly visitors, and upstairs is quite young and trendy casual.
Service at Kuya Asian Pub: 8/10
The staff are very friendly and fast in good Asian style. It is wonderfully easy to catch their eye, unlike in many restaurants. There are lots of cocktails, but a limited wine list (if inexpensive).
