Our Review of Zest, St Julian's
Food at Zest: 15/20
This Asian fusion restaurant is located in a hotel, but does not feel like it, and is definitely way above the average hotel restaurant. As so often in Asian restaurants on this fishing island, the menu leans more to the Japanese side with a good selection of sushi and sashimi - six pieces of the latter a real bargain at €10.50. Hot starters are also good, and pulled form across Asia. Highlights being duck & coriander Japanese Gyoza at €9, Chinese pork soup dumplings at €10.50, 4 pieces of Indonesian chicken satay at €10.50 with homemade peanut sauce, and prawn & shiitake Thai style dim sums at €10. For mains there is Chinese style peking duck, half at €22 or whole for €39, but the curries are even better. ‘Zest signature’ beef rendang at €24, Keng Curry Koong (Yellow king prawn curry with lime leaf, lemongrass and turmeric) at €23, Peranakan chicken thigh curry with figs at €22, and Gulai Kambing (lamb leg slow cooked in aromatic spices and coconut milk) at €24. Prices are generally good and there is even a set menu (with limited choice) at €48.
Atmosphere at Zest: 8/10
Although hidden away up a small staircase, once inside the décor is smart and modern, and the atmosphere upmarket. There is live music on Wednesdays and Fridays which is a delight for locals, otherwise the crowd is dominated by visitors. The noise level is moderate apart from on live music nights, but even then is not too bad.
Service at Zest: 8/10
Service is very good under the firm eye of the Filipino manager. The team cope well with requests and allergies (they are obviously used to American tourists). The wine list is largely reasonable, as long as you avoid the €90 local wine pushed by the team. Very good cocktails from the young mixologists in the bar.
