Our Review of Hammett's Monastik, Sliema
Food at Hammett's Monastik: 15/20
California friends first recommended this restaurant to me, and I can see why. The restaurant's name is derived from the medieval monasteries that flourished across Europe for centuries - self-sufficient, living off the local land, and in harmony with nature. All of which are virtues this establishment holds dear. The cooking is simple but good, with some American style touches. One thing that is not American however, is the star turn - the suckling pig, local of course, sold by weight at €7 per 100g (top tip don't listen to your waiter, half a kilo is enough for two believe me). Amongst the starters, the iceberg salad at €15 was a bit too American for me, while by contrast the Aubergine tartare at just €12 was exploding with flavour, as was a fish tartare special. If you are not a baby pig person then there are plenty of steaks in the thirties, with sauces on the side, and a roast lamb also at €7 per 100g, to choose from amongst the mains. The steaks are wood fired if you care for that.
Atmosphere at Hammett's Monastik: 8/10
The interior has a rustic feel with lots of wood and greenery, reflecting the natural cuisine, though I am not sure any monastery was ever quite this sleek. There are beautiful views of Valletta and the Marsamxett harbour from the large windows if you have a drink on the terrace or sit in the right place. You'll get a whiff of the woodfire if you sit in the wrong place. The crowd is mainly visitors. Noise level is normally good, unless you are there on a music night in which case this is not a place for conversation.
Service at Hammett's Monastik: 7/10
There are plenty of waiters and they are friendly. They will neglect you however if you do not keep on their case. The wine list here is very well chosen, but not cheap (those American visitors have deep pockets). A Pouilly Fuisse is €84, and a Chablis 1er Cru €88. The Puligny Montrachet is €120. That said there are plenty of cheap Spanish and Italian alternatives. For a real treat for the fatter wallets they have Alter Ego at €170.
