Our Review of Blue Whale, St Paul's Bay
Food at Blue Whale: 13/20
Oh for more good Chinese restaurants in Malta. There is a sad lack. Here at the Blue Whale you can partially scratch your itch, and it is certainly worth going to if you are so inclined and live in the north of the Island. Order some prawn crackers and tuck in. All the dishes that should be here are here, and are executed competently though not superbly. Spring rolls, pork or vegetarian, are €8. A range of Dim Sum (perhaps not as light as they should be) – pork, beef and chicken are at €12, while shrimp for some reason costs €16. There is an excellent choice of starters including quails at €24, and grilled baby squid at €15. They do a whole Peking Duck at €42, or a half at €24. Lots of seafood main dishes, I would recommend the Kong Po prawn at €23, and they do have lobster though it is €65. Again a wide range of meat dishes, five beef dishes alone form €16 to €32. Amongst the pork dishes they have Cantonese style roast pork for €18.
Atmosphere at Blue Whale: 8/10
The best way to see St Paul’s bay is from the inside of this glass box, which hangs above it, out of the often fierce wind. Inevitably lots of British expats missing Soho’s Chinatown head here, along with Maltese locals. The noise level is good. It feels lie a proper restaurant and people certainly don’t turn up in ripped t-shirts. I presume the locals save those for doing the gardening, or at least sailing in the wind.
Service at Blue Whale: 8/10
The many Indian waiters deliver a high standard of service, of the old school. Complete with hostess trolleys and the occasional flourish. The wine list is also quite competent and wide ranging, without any standouts.
