Our Review of The Griffin, Rabat (Verdala)

Food at The Griffin: 14/20

This is not a cheap restaurant but the quality fo the food is good here. I’m not so sure this is a “brasserie” - it rather has a slight touch of the better London clubs about the cuisine. Amongst the raw starters is a trio of cured seafood, which serves two at €18 per person, and a beef carpaccio, with fermented mushrooms and seaweed at €18. The hot starters include steamed mussels at €16 (with ginger, lemongrass, white wine), stuffed local zucchini flowers in 3 ways (caponata, local sheep cheese, mushroom), good if on the small side. And an intriguing octopus lasagne, or an excellent acquarello risotto (with butternut squash, radicchio, and 24-month comté) both at €18. 48-month comte would have been better. Main courses are ribeye on the bone for €36, wild seabass for two at €58 with preserved lemon and white miso, and, rare in Malta – a pithivier (as you know a sort of French pie) if sadly not the usual duck in this case, but rather celeriac and portobello mushroom with vegetable jus, at €40

Atmosphere at The Griffin: 7/10

Hotel restaurants always have to overcome a first hurdle, though in the case of the luxurious Verdala Spa it is always a pleasure to walk through its cavernous lobby. When you eventually get to the restaurant, at least there’s something of a view, and tables outside in summer. The food may be London club, but the look is definitely not dark woods, but rather modern hotel chic. Americans love it here. The restaurant is quiet midweek, and this would be a good place for a business dinner. Obviously hotel guests are welcome here, but children are definitely not – this is an adults only restaurant.

Service at The Griffin: 8/10

The staff are well trained and attentive. There are lots of exotic cocktails to choose from and a perfectly competent wine list, though sadly not at London club prices. A look at the French wines gave me heartburn. Fortunately amongst the whites they have a good Greek Assyrtiko.
