Our Review of Tartarun, Marsaxlokk
Food at Tartarun: 17/20
This family run restaurant in the deep south of the island, has clawed its way to a Michelin star by cooking at the highest standard. It is undoubtedly the best fish and seafood restaurant in Malta, quite something in this Fishy Island where the Japanese choose to get their tuna. Talking of which, the cuisine here adds interest with a Japanese twist. Begin your evening with a choice of their snacks, indeed these are so good you could argue you should just eat these all night. Particularly recommended are green olive tartelette & anchovy, prawn tartar & Iberica ham croustade with sudachi, confit kombu, and ponzu marinated `tuna`, brioche, crème fraiche, `furikake` all at €10. The starters are all outstanding and it is a good idea to share. Think about the fish tartar, finger lime, horseradish & tomato dressing at €18, pink prawn capaccio fleur de sel, white soy, lemon & 'evoo' at €18 or octopus & `lardo`, grilled with `togarashi`, `caponata`, sauce `matelote` for €19. For main courses the fresh fish is sold by weight at €79 a kilo, and prepared however you wish, or there is the excellent local lobster at market price if you are feeling flush (it was over a €100 when we dined).
Atmosphere at Tartarun: 7/10
Tartarun has a loyal following of well healed locals, and foody visitors who know it is well worth a cab ride of barely twenty minutes from Valetta. Although on the seafront, sadly there are no waterside tables, but rather a chich interior of well padded, if simple luxury. Noise level is good, so this is a good place to come if you want to have conversation. You must book.
Service at Tartarun: 8/10
The two brothers who created this gastronomic temple, Stephen and James Schiavone and their families remain in charge. James is the Chef and Stephen runs front of house, and is head sommelier. Service is professional and well informed. The wine lists is excellent and not quite as punitive as at some of the other Michelin starred restaurants, but don’t expect any bargains. Naturally amongst the 150 names there is a good selection of local whites, including a Gran Cavalier Sauvignon Blanc, as well as many from Italy and France, including a superb Condrieu.
