Our Review of Palazzo Preca, Valletta

Food at Palazzo Preca: 14/20

The Preca sisters (Ramona and Roberta) learnt their craft from their father Charles who was a chef in Valletta and at the family restaurant Tal-Familja in Marsascala. They have won lots of awards and this is a classic restaurant with many classic dishes of the old school, though they are often given an innovative twist. For example, a Veal Carpaccio with roasted hazelnuts, truffle oil and pecorino at €16.90, or Cured Salmon Gravlax (infused with vanilla pod and red peppercorn dressing) at €16.50. There’s lots of good shellfish. Amongst the starters, shellfish soup at €22.90, fresh Red Prawns at €19.50 fresh mussels with wine or impepata (fresh black pepper) €16.50. And the speciality here is Lobster Thermidor at €13.50 for each 100g. They have plenty of steaks amongst the meat main dishes, such as a rib-eye at €34, with sauce of your choice, or a filet a la Romana (with port and demerara sugar sauce) at €39. There’s also a good pork schnitzel at €39.

Atmosphere at Palazzo Preca: 7/10

The salon is quite grand, as you would expect in a Palazzo, though with rather kooky art on the walls. The side room has chairs that are so uncomfortable that you will find them unbearable, so stick to the main area. The crowd is a mix of tourists and Maltese families. Can be quite buzzy on religious festivals but the noise level is generally good.

Service at Palazzo Preca: 7/10

The two sisters who run this place are great fun and you will have a good time if they are around. Otherwise service is generally good, but we have experienced ‘longueurs.’ The wine list is very good, the sisters know their wine and vintages are obviously shown, not always the case in Malta, but it is not cheap. At the bottom end a Pecorino, or a Greco di Tufo are €34. Jean Collet’s Chablis at €39 is better value. Higher up his Grand Cru is €120, while the classic Puligny Montrachet les Folatieres is inevitably €175. Amongst the reds, Brunello di Montalcino is €95, a Barolo Pajana €110. The Frech reds go all the way. A 2006 Chateau Palmer is €750, but there are lots of really excellent wines for under €100.
