Our Review of Rosami, St Julian's (Balluta Bay)
Food at Rosami: 14/20
Henry Ford famously said customers could have any colour automobile, as long as it was black. A principle that has been taken on board here. The cooking is good at Rosami, but with a fatal floor. They only offer one ‘surprise’ menu, the Carte Blanche, with no substitutions, at either six courses for €105, or eight courses for €120. This is supposed to change daily, but spies report there are several dishes that seem to appear again and again, scallops, rabbit and beef being three examples. If you are allergic to one of these, or indeed any other dish, you are urged to warn them in advance, but you must yourself be warned the chef will simply put you on a vegetarian diet. We were offered sauteed celeriac for one course, and a roast carrot for our mains. This simply is unacceptable in any restaurant, and certainly when you are paying €120. I would strongly advise telephoning to find out exactly what is on offer, and only go if you like the complete selection of dishes.
Atmosphere at Rosami: 7/10
This is an upmarket, chich place that is both plush and hushed. The crowd is mainly visitors, a lot of them Americans, but very quiet ones. At these prices I presume they are hedge fund managers or Private Equity executives who were probably once physics nerds. Not a naturally lively bunch. The décor is tasteful and the art is too. I’m sure millionaires feel at home.
Service at Rosami: 7/10
Service is at a high standard, but given the inflexibility on the menus little is called for from the waiting staff other than saying “no” to your requests. The wine list offers broad choice, but often at nosebleed prices, unless you have just arrived from New York in which case I’m sure it seems reasonable. One of the lesser champagnes is €140, Pol Roger comes in at €250. There are some cheap Italians, like a Greco di Tufo at €43, and even a Slovenian Rebula for a €100, but then if paying this much for food one wants something better to go with it. A Domaine Chavy-Chouet - Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru ‘Les Enseignères’ is €215, the Domaine Leflaive - Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru ‘Clavoillon’ is at €870. Among the reds there are also a few bargains, I found three good wines at ‘reasonable’ prices if you know what you’re doing, but a 2020 Château Tertre Roteboeuf - Saint-Émilion Grand Cru, surely only just ready to drink, is €1300. Oh if only the hedgies hadn’t discovered good wine.
