Our Review of Tal Familja Restaurant, Marsaskala
Food at Tal Familja Restaurant: 14/20
The Preca family has a long and proud tradition of serving high quality cuisine which has found fulfilment in the Palazzo Preca in Valletta. But the 'mother ship' is here at Tal-Familja Restaurant in Marsaskala. Since 1998 Daniela Preca, and various members of the Family, have been serving well executed, traditional, old school Italian and Maltese dishes, and doing so at affordable prices. Plenty of fish and seafood, as ever in Malta, but a very welcome selection of dishes for "those who do not like fish." The menu is simply enormous, and it is hard to do it justice here. Plenty of classics such as Fresh Prawns, avocado & pink sauce, or Prosciutto Di Parma con Melone, both at €9.50. Vol Au Vent di Funghi and Aljotta, the traditional Maltese fish soup with rice, are at €8.90. A ton of pasta dishes including lasagne for just €8.50, Veal Ravioli at €9.50, and Linguini Caruso, Chopped prawns, calamaretti, chilli, wine & garlic at €12.50. Tourists can add €3.50 to have them as a main. Afterwards you have lots of different fresh fish, at €6 per 100 grammes, or for the meat eaters Grilled breast of Duck, served with orange sauce & forest fruits at €22.90 or Vitella Saltimbocca at €19.50. Amongst the Maltese main corses are Ħut fiz-zalza, Grilled fish served on a caper and tomato sauce at €17.90 and Ħaruf il-Forn Sliced roast lamb served on mash potato & gravy €22.00. It's a veritable cornucopia with something for everyone in even the most picky of families.
Atmosphere at Tal Familja Restaurant: 7/10
Although the website promises views of the countryside that must have been written when the restaurant was founded in the 90's, as now it has been swallowed up in an urban landscape. This is not a posh neighbourhood, but this is nonetheless quite a smart restaurant - in the traditional manner. Not a place either for minimalist design and uber chic, but rather homely, family comforts. It does however get points for having proper table cloths and napkins, all too often absent in Malta in even the best places. In terms of crowd, this is a little out of the way for many tourists but is beloved by locals. There is a veranda which is too hot for lunch in summer, but fun in the evenings.
Service at Tal Familja Restaurant: 8/10
The service was very good on our visit, though the restaurant was quiet. Attentive and well informed. The wine list is excellent, with a good sprinkling of every country and with a good range of prices. There are the usual stable of Italian staples, among the whites a Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio is €24, a Gavi di Gavi just €20. Higher up there is Drouhin's Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons 2018 at €65.00. In the reds a basic chianti is €17, and an Amarone 2016 is €85. A Barolo San Carlo is €60. This is a place wine lovers will want to come back to.
