Food at 59 Republic: 15/20
The menu here caters for 59’s distinguished clientele – light, but imaginative international dishes. Some quite American, others Japanese. The ‘bite size’ snacks are probably enough for some of the size zero ladies - Salmon tartare, prawn tacos, and Mac n’cheese bites are all at €15.. Those of healthier appetites head toward the starters such lobster gyozas at €24, Japanese wagyu tartare at €45, prawn tempura at €18. Main courses are definitely for big eaters. A beef wellington at €39 and a salmon one at €38. A rack of lamb at €37, and a beef fillet at €38. Sides and sauces are both extra, so a full meal can soon add up. It’s worth checking out the set menus which are not always obvious and are priced at €60 and €70.
Atmosphere at 59 Republic: 8/10
This is a chic restaurant where it is a true pleasure to dine outside April to November, or lunch most of the year.. It feels quite like a smart Knightsbridge or upper East side restaurant for the ladies who lunch, and you will sure enough find many of them here, together with quite a few ordinary visitors (the Grand Master’s Palace is right opposite). In Winter months you can eat in the downstairs vault, down a vertiginous staircase.
Service at 59 Republic: 7/10
The wait staff require firm handling. Some are certainly better than others. Be clear about what order you want dishes in, or indeed anything else that is important to you. You were warned. Cocktails are excellent (they even offer an After |Eight post dinner one at €14). The wine list is very good, especially the whites, including by the glass. A Sancerre for just €14 a glass, €18 will get you a glass of Rothschild champagne. There’s a good Condrieu for €98, an excellent one for €120. The superb Louis Moreau, Chablis grand cru les clos is €130.
