Food at Maldonado Gozo: 14/20
A delightful find with innovative cooking from around the world, in some ways Gozo’s version of Malta’s AYU. You should begin with some of the interesting snacks like sweet & sour aubergine at €9 with pistachio dukkha, or ‘polpetti tal-majjal’ (pork meat balls, tomato sofrito, pepato cheese), at €9.50, let alone the swordfish koftas at €9.50, or the stuffed calamaretti at €9. Favourite starters include a twice-baked hazelnut and gorgonzola cheese souffle at €13.50, and a tuna tomato at €13, and there is a good spiced beef chou farci at €14. Amongst the more interesting main courses are Iberico pork at €26.50 and ‘gurbell’ moqueca baiana’ (an afro-brazilian seafood stew with coconut milk, tomatoes, red bell peppers, fillet of meagre, mussels & shrimps) at .€27.50
Atmosphere at Maldonado Gozo: 7/10
Maldonado Bistro is housed in the basement of a traditional Maltese townhouse situated on the periphery of the historic centre of Victoria, Gozo. I know we don’t like basements, but it is nonetheless a well-appointed basement, and this restaurant is a favourite for visitors and music/theatre lovers attending a performance at one of the nearby theatres. Those nights it is a bit dressier, but otherwise it is casual. It is generally quiet, with a good noise level.

The service is very friendly and helpful, and can be fast if you are going to a show. Cocktails are good. The wine list is pretty straightforward. Lots of Maltese and Italians at reasonable prices, and the occasional treat.
