Food at Toro Toro: 16/20
Toro Toro is chef Richard Sandoval's Latin American creation. Its core mission is described thus: Across Latin America, food is more than a meal. It's an event. It's a celebration that's shared, savoured and enjoyed with the finest spirits. Join us in this ritual. Dishes come from across the continent with several standing out. Smoked guacamole at 14 euros is smoked under a dome in front of you (part of the event aspect). Tuna Tataki at 18 euros is particularly well done, as are the Cachapas at 12 euros for Venezuela (sweet corn pancakes stuffed with haloumi cheese and sour cream). Prices are generally reasonable unless you are a beef lover. A sirloin is 55 euros and Beef tenderloin weighs in at 74 euros. There are Halal meat options, including a rib eye steak at 52 euros. Better value are the Lamb chops at 32 euros, and delicious to boot. If the meal as an event part of your evening has not been completely satisfied then definitely take the La Bomba desert at 20 euros which brings out the child in every patron, and has the restaurant wondering what the hell is going on.
Atmosphere at Toro Toro: 8/10
Situated on the eleventh floor of Zaha Hadid's iconic Mercury Tower, Toro Toro lives up to its location. If you have ever been to the more dramatic restaurants in Buenos Aires, then you will have an idea of what to expect. Sweeping sight lines and high ceilings, and a general atmosphere that a party is in progress. The noise level can seem high until the cocktails kick in, particularly on weekend nights when they have a DJ. The music does get more haunting as the evening goes on. Quite a lot of the Maltese jet set will be found here, as well as better informed visitors. They need to be well informed, as finding the restaurant is not always easy. Look for the giant golden bull in the square downstairs, and through an entrance behind him a security guard escorts you to a lift to the tenth floor.
Service at Toro Toro: 6/10
The Latin American staff are perfectly friendly and some of them are very efficient. But others seem to have been trained by someone who doesn't quite get the customer is always right mantra. On several visits it has been hard to sit where you want, even when the restaurant is only half full. Once we were turfed off out table before desert because we had been there two hours and there were people waiting in the bar. On repairing to the bar we found it empty. There is also an enthusiasm for upselling which can be annoying, and it is important to check your bill. The wine list is one of those classified annoying descriptions like light and fruity etc, rather than by country, which will annoy traditionalists. Prices are slightly above average for Malta, with a Gavi la Scolca at 44 euros. There is a range of higher priced wines in the hundreds for the jet set.
