Our Review of The Grotto Tavern, Rabat

Food at The Grotto Tavern: 15/20

Grotto Tavern aims to “celebrate the rich flavours of Malta and the Mediterranean.” They put emphasis on fresh, local products and their menu is a “contemporary reinterpretation of regional classics.” They work closely with certified suppliers and dedicated farmers from Zebbuġ, Naxxar, Rabat, Burmarrad, and Zebbiegħ. This place is really all about the grotto which means you should book there and take either the seven course tasting menu (a lot of food) at €100, or the 5 course pre fixe menu at € 80 per person. Warning - this is more like a three course meal as you get a few snacks then a choice of starter, main course & dessert. Starters might include - snail & potato, the very good quail (with boudin, prickly pear and hazelnut), or local prawns with a cashew miso. There is normally a pasta alternative such as ġbejna & pumpkin tortellacci. Main courses might be the tasty duck breast with consommé, black garlic, mandarin and confit leg, heritage beef, or golden meagre with fish bone sauce. Deserts are caramelised apple tart, orange opera with almond, white chocolate and cardamon, almond & chocolate praline mousse, or artisanal cheese from żejtun

Atmosphere at The Grotto Tavern: 8/10

This is venue is beloved by visitors. There are three areas here. The Garden Dining Room, the Exclusive Private Room (for Groups) or the Cave Area – the eponymous grotto. You should sit in the grotto, unless you are very claustrophobic or have young children as this space is reserved for adult bookings only, due to “the particular setup and the romantic ambiance this unique space offers.” Young guests, twelve years of age and older are welcome in the 'Cave Room', provided “they enjoy our set menus and the good company of their guests, without the use of electronics.” This is indeed a good place for a romantic dinner where you can talk to your dinner companion.

Service at The Grotto Tavern: 9/10

Very high quality and well informed service here form a professional staff. Michael the Sommelier certainly knows his stuff. The tavern promotes sommelier-guided pairings for its à la carte and tasting menus. The wain pairing comes at €45 per person. Guests enjoy selections from local Maltese estates such as Delicata or Meridiana. There is also a good selection of French and Italian wines at under €100 which I would recommend.
