Food at Agora: 14/20
They may offer a Greek salad, and have a touch of Mykonos about them, but don’t think this is a Greek restaurant. It’s very much Turkish. To start, there is a Haloumi cheese at €9, and lots and lots of good Meze at just €5, including baba ghanoush and other aubergine dishes, spicey ezme, hummus with and without beetroot, and bell peppers. At €7 are seabass or salmon marina, prawns and shrimps. For main courses lots of fish naturally at €19, and a grilled lobster at €39. There are various kebabs and meatballs for meat lovers, and a rib eye at €22.
Atmosphere at Agora: 8/10
Always a fun evening here. Somehow I feel like I am on holiday when I go here. The atmosphere conjures up the islands of the Eastern Mediterranean. The crowd is not particularly dressy but mainly locals and expats (this is Ta' Xbiex), with a few visitors. The noise level is at a fun level without being deafening, and there is often background music.
Service at Agora: 8/10
The staff are very friendly, not just because the boss keeps a keen eye on them. They will guide you through the menu which is lucky as a lot of things aren’t explained in English. I find myself asking about twenty questions before ordering. The wine list is quite interesting, and could perhaps include some of the Greek wines in good supply in Malta in future. At the moment you are probably safest with the Italians in the twenties. The wines that is.
