Food at Full House: 13/20
This is the ideal place if you have the kids in tow, or have just had a rough brush with your bank manager. Come for the Pielmieni alone. The Polish equivalent of Dim Sum are served here in a butter sauce and are simply delicious - if a little heavy. Just avoid the bathroom scales the next morning. This little Polish cafe in Birgu serves authentic Polish and Eastern European comfort food at affordable prices, with typical dishes priced around €8.50 to €15. Lovers of Polish food know what to expect. Dumplings (Pierogi, Pyzy, Pielmieni) are to the fore, with a range of options like potato and cottage cheese, mixed meat, potato with plums, or cabbage and mushrooms (all under €15). Other rotating specialties include Polish sour rye soup, dill meatballs, stuffed cabbage (gołąbki), and crispy pork cutlets (schabowy). Our personal favourite is the polish sausage at just €13. Kids may prefer the Polish baguettes and pizzas. Traditional 40cm Zapiekanka baguettes (€8.50) and a selection of pizzas including Polish sausage, Margherita, pepperoni, and chicken BBQ (€9.00 – €12.50).
Atmosphere at Full House: 5/10
Inside is a bit grim and can only really be faced on a cold January night. A little Polish tchotchke really would make all the difference. Thank God for warm Maltese evenings when your best bet are the tables on the street outside that runs off Birgu's main square. Just beware passing traffic. Apart from the odd local, the crowd is Poles missing home, and tourists on a budget.
Service at Full House: 7/10
The friendly couple who run the place split duties with hubby in the kitchen and the wife outside. Various young Poles, of differing skill levels, fill in when they are off duty and on busy nights. You can get Polish vodka here with various flavours, and Polish beer. There are also the usual Italian wines at wonderfully low prices. One punter was heard to ask "is that €13 a bottle or a glass?"
