Food at Harbour Club: 16/20
There is a high level of expertise in the kitchen here and the cooking is complex. By contrast, the pricing is straight forward - €55 for two courses, €70 for three, and good value compared to other restaurants at this level. The starters are excellent, particularly the pumpkin tart (caramelised Hokkaido pumpkin, pumpkin seed curd compressed pumpkin and local goat cheese) and the acquerello risotto with (diced calamari, caramelised cauliflower and calamari mousse). There is also a duck terrine with a little pickled beetroot tart, and fagottini stuffed with sheep ricotta & wild mushroom duxelle, mushroom pâté and glazed maitake, served with an aromatic mushroom broth. Amongst the main courses the port braised pork cheek with fortified wine sauce and the lamb rump stand out. There is also a catch of the day with mussels & cannellini beans and the evening we last dined they offered a well-executed sous vide hanger steak. Desserts are tempting if you have room, and just as inventive. Basque parsnip & chamomile compôte with hazelnut crumble and salted caramel ice cream is particularly memorable. And there is a rich chocolate & orange concoction of warm chocolate sponge and molten chocolate orange ganache with black orange powder and barley ice cream. Note there is a good value pasta and desert lunch for just €25 a head
Atmosphere at Harbour Club: 7/10
In summer months the tables outside have a good view across the Grand Harbour, often with free fireworks thrown in, albeit also with passing traffic and a swarm of tourists from the nearby ferry stop. On Winter evenings then punters must descend to the interior space beneath which has two rooms – a simple one at the front and a cavernous one dug into the rocks below. The crowd is mainly a mix of visitors and expats.
Service at Harbour Club: 8/10
Service is at a very high level here, especially under the firm eye of the lady Maitre D’. Cocktails are good and there is a full wine list, but do not expect any bargains. A simple Chablis from Louis Latour that elsewhere is €45 is €65 here. Bret brothers Pouilly Fuisse is €69. Better stick to the cheapo Italians – a Gavi di Gavi is €31, and a Greco di Tufo €37. The reds are almost as tough, a 2016 Barolo is €190, and even a Chateau Musar from Lebanon is €81. There are just a few good ones for around €60.
