Food at Noni: 15/20
Technically superb cooking at this Michelin star restaurant is compromised by miniscule portion size and lack of choice. The set menu comes in two sizes, ‘intro’ at €115 or ‘deluxe’ at €135, but both are characterized by a lack of choice, and the habitual Maltese rabbit. Anyone with allergies must write two days in advance, but substitution is punished with vegetarian alternatives. An extra course, normally revolving around snails, is available at a € 25 supplement, which I nonetheless would advise for those with appetite and income. A ‘pasta dish’ of ‘lasagne’ or ‘spaghetti’ raises the hopes of hungry diners, but they have never been near carbs. The cuisine is well executed but lacks true invention around choice. Older clientele with small appetites and those on Ozempic may enjoy the experience but the rest of us will leave hungry and poor.
Atmosphere at Noni: 7/10
Slightly off the beaten track at the further end of the main street in Valletta. The ground floor is somewhat soulless, but if you chose the basement, you have the heat of the kitchen. At these prices the crowd is mainly wealthy tourists celebrating birthdays or wedding anniversaries. Noise level is hushed foodies in the presence of sacred offerings.
Service at Noni: 7/10
Service is well trained, but they just can’t help feeling they are doing you a favour. The wine prices are stratospheric. Premium pairing is €165 a head so you might as well choose a couple of good bottles yourself, just about possible. You can stick to juices at €55 a head each if teetotal or ‘economizing’.
