Food at San Blas Kiosk: 14/20
The Maltese islands delight in 'hard to get to' restaurants and this one probably takes the crown in multiple ways. You really have to sail here, as the 'road' down (more accurately a rock strewn, pot-holed track) is so vertiginous driving down feels like dropping over a cliff in a particularly bumpy cart. Not to be attempted by the uninitiated. Read my lips – do not drive here. For those on a boat, particularly those who are lovers of remote beaches, the little one here is worth the sail, as is the restaurant cum cafe. Mario and his charming Brazilian wife churn out straightforward but wonderfully fresh food for yachtees. The menu is obviously simple, but the starters – mussels, calamari, red prawns – were all perfect. For mains you really should have fish, but there are pork chops etc for non fish eaters. Simple but perfectly executed food. Prices are good, if not exactly bottom draw kiosk.
Atmosphere at San Blas Kiosk: 8/10
"The Ritz it ain't." This is a glorified shack up above the beach. It's tiny, with just a handful of tables, so best to book. Having said that the phone number is a well kept secret, so you may need to bribe a local. But it is definitely worth steering your boat here if you can get in, to drink in this elemental experience. Sometimes the beach is sandy, sometimes it is all rocks. So this is not an ideal place for the elderly or infirm. The yachtees are here in force, in shorts and the occasional t-shirt, if not bare chested. Mainly locals, but some enterprising visitors, who get through the various hurdles and who must take a pledge not to spoil it. Beware – this is a cash only spot.

The service by different members of the family is perfect. You won't wait a moment or not have every whim catered for. There is not a fine wine list, obviously, though I suspect this may change as the Islands go more and more upmarket, and the boat owners well healed. But you have plenty of the usual Italians in the twenties, and Aperol spritzes beforehand. Address & Contact San Blas bay, near Nadur
