Our Review of Barracuda, St Julian's (Balluta Bay)

Food at Barracuda: 14/20

The cuisine here is international, indeed there is just about something from every major food culture. There is a good selection of fish, shellfish and oysters, check with your server what’s good today, and fresh oysters (six are €20.50). Amongst starters there is soft shell crab when in season for €13, and fried calamari for €10, or for meat lovers stir fried beef, or a beef tarte tatin or a beef carpaccio all for about €10. There are always specials each day, which are recommended, and watch out for interesting additions such as wild boar. Amongst the staples are various fish (salmon, swordfish and meagre, a white fish) normally in the low twenties, and there are Veal escalopes with lemon at €19, a Grilled lamb duo or a char grilled rib eye at €23. A particular highlight is that Barracuda is one of the only places in Malta where you can get their version of Crepes Suzettes. Hoorah!

Atmosphere at Barracuda: 8/10

Perched above the Med, dining in this glass restaurant can sometimes feel like you are in a James Bond movie, with many of the kind of characters you would find in one. Very popular with expats and locals, this is a buzzy, dressy place, at weekends, but the noise level is OK. Much quieter in Winter. There are a handful of outside tables for warm nights.

Service at Barracuda: 7/10

The mainly Eastern European serving staff command several languages including Russian and German. They are competent and efficient. The wine list is good but not cheap. For the bond villains there is Dom Perignon at €350, or Bolly at €135. But there are also bargains, particularly amongst the good Bordeaux. And for those whose film career is confined to being an extra there is a pinot grigio at €27 or a Soave at €26.50.
