Our Review of Kaiseki, Valletta
Food at Kaiseki: 14/20
Kaiseki is an Asian/Mediterranean fusion restaurant. This can seem strange at times but it works. The name Kaiseki comes from a traditional style of Japanese cuisine in which a series of small, intricate dishes are prepared. As such the starters are more interesting than the main courses, which are limited in number, so consider this when you order. The standout amongst the starters are the mushroom tartlets made with shiitake mushroom soy filling, grana, and puffed buckwheat at €13.50 for four. They are delicious. Also good are the pork gyoza at €14.50, the shrimp dumplings at €16, and the satay chicken skewers at €14. Less successful is the crispy tuna with Philadelphia cheese at €14.5. There are also a few pasta and ravioli dishes, an excellent prawn and nduja (mezze maniche, prawn bisque, finished with nduja and herb butter) as a starter at €16/main €21. A cauliflower and chevre risotto €14/€19, and rabbit ravioli (this is Valletta) at €16/€22. Amongst the main courses the Iberico Pork at €29, and the Chicken Karaage (crispy japanese chicken, with a peanut and red curry sauce, a fried egg, and egg-fried rice) at €28 are recommended. There is also a fish dish and a beef one, but I wish there were more choice.
Atmosphere at Kaiseki: 7/10
Kaiseki is situated underground in the heart of Valletta. It is a small, but well-appointed room. The tables for two are a little small considering the multi-dish sharing concept, so maybe ask for food to come out in a staggered pattern (usually not a problem). The crowd is dominated by visitors with a few locals. Noise level is good.
Service at Kaiseki: 8/10
The young Asian couple who run Kaiseki are proud of what they do and will be quick to serve you. Cocktails are good. The wine list is small but serviceable. There are a few good wines, but sadly no vintages indicated. A Millet Sancerre is €49, among the reds there is a Saint Emilion Grand Cru at €58 (no year indicated), and a Chateau d’Arcens at €45 (2020 when we asked). An Amarone from Bennati is €70 and a Barolo Buon Padre is €80. Address and contact info:
