Food at Le GV: 9/20
The latest Malta restaurant to obtain a Michelin star takes innovative cooking to new heights of artistry and discovery. There are set menus available at prices which could only be dreamed of in New York or London. 3 courses @€75, 4 courses @€95 and 6 courses @€125. Portion sizes are just right and there is no danger of you going home hungry. However, there is only a choice of two for each course so it would be wise to check the menu on their website and more than ever advise of any allergies. Many dishes are simply outstanding. Foie gras custard with Jerusalem Artichoke and Confit of Oyster Mushroom, and Paccheri ‘Metodo Massi’ with Fermented carrot, Mandarin and Red Prawns particularly stand out.
Atmosphere at Le GV: 8/10
Situated on the roof of the 1926 hotel this restaurant is chic in the Parisian style. Long and thin, it deliberately brings to mind dining on the Orient Express. There are only a few tables, with beautiful white tablecloths, so definitely book ahead. This also keeps the noise level down. The crowd is well dressed cognoscenti enjoying the artistry
Service at Le GV: 9/10
Service is impeccably well trained and polite. Cooking at this level obviously comes when it comes, but there are plenty of little “gifts from the chef” to ensure there are never unwanted pauses. The sommelier has crafted an excellent wine list with strong French and Italian showings, and unusually for a restaurant at this level there are some excellent ‘bargains’ at €70.
