Barroco Malta: Italian in Birgu (Vittoriosa)

Our Review of Barroco, Birgu (Vittoriosa)
Food at Barroco: 14/20
Terrone has a cute younger brother – Barrocco. This more casual dining is an ideal place for lunch on a sunny day, if you want good food at a slightly more affordable price level. The cooking is still good. Take the snacks like chicken liver on toast at €3 each, or Cantabrian anchovy on toast at €5.There is a good selection of salads from a Caesar €12 upwards, and interesting starters such as wood roasted octopus with anchovies at €14, or Frittatina Carbonar at €14. Pasta is always good in this establishment – watch out for the nettle ravioli stuffed with sheep cheese. Amongst main courses there is a classic pork chop or a poussin with salsa verde both at €16. The Maltese Lemon Tart cuts through the palette like a knife, and the ice creams such as the Ricotta and Bronte pistachio are particularly delicious and creamy. And just €4 a scoop.
Atmosphere at Barroco: 8/10
There are only a few tables here, and they have checkered table cloths to distinguish them from the Big Brother next door. They are grouped beneath the Renaissance aqueduct giving an impressive backdrop, and overlooking a small sort of harbour. The crowd is a mix of locals and visitors and most seem to be having fun.
Service at Barroco: 7/10
It's a friendly team here when they get to know you. The wine list is adapted for the less expensive concept, a Val Docca extra dry prosecco for a sunny afternoon at €25, a Greco di Tufo at €28. Amongst the French wines there is a decent white Rhone, Boutinot La Fleur Solitaire, at €35, and their red one Les Couteaux at just €30. There is a good selection of cocktails with proper measures including excellent spritzes.
