Food at Bebirgu: 14/20
Simple food, with a few touristy options (rabbit of course). Stick to what these guys do best. Soups, risottos and pasta - they change daily. Examples would be a mushroom soup at €12, a risotto made with pumpkin and gruyere at €19, or pappardelle with beef ragu at €19. These are the best of the menu. Amongst the main courses are things such as porchetta romana (crispy pork belly) at €21, costata di manzo, Argentinian ribeye, price dependant on the market, and of course a catch of the day, such as sea bass at €25. Deserts are brought out for you to look at, which I fear often leads to chickening out, but must also avoid annoying complaints. Pistacchio based dishes are to the fore.
Atmosphere at Bebirgu: 8/10
Perhaps the best thing about this restaurant is the fact that it is situated in the old Palazzo Huesca in the heart of historic Birgu. Sitting in the courtyard on a warm night can be very romantic. There is also a terrace outside overlooking the square, which is a little on show, and two different private rooms for the winter. Warning can be chilly. The crowd is dominated by visitors, and children are welcomed. Noise level is good.
Service at Bebirgu: 8/10
Glen’s team are friendly and ever present. You can certainly eat a full dinner here quickly if you so wish, so Americans love it. Cocktails are good. There are plenty of bargain options on the wine list, from the Maltese falcon wines at only €19 upwards. This is a place for a good meal on a budget.
