Our Review of Maresco, Cospicua (Bormla)
Food at Maresco: 13/20
We love a new restaurant, but this one really needs to find its feet. It is making several ‘schoolboy errors’ including being the only Italian restaurant in Malta that prints the menu only in Italian. Do they only want Italian tourists? Prices are quite high and portions could be bigger. All of which is a shame as the cooking has the potential to be quite good. Tartare di tonno tonno is at €16, marea del sud selezione di crostacei is €35, oysters/prawns are €36 for six, a daily carpaccio is €17. There are some salads at €17, but they are too small to satisfy you for lunch, and the fish burgers are very potatoe-y. Fish pasta dishes range from €14 to €29, but are also munchkin size. For main courses grilled fish come at €30 – salmon or swordfish etc, and they normally have a whole fresh fish which was €75 when we had it. I’d advise you to debone it yourself or half will end up in tomorrow’s soup. Small portions of vegetables come separately at €5 for each one. You will need several. This is not a place to come if you are hungry, or you don’t speak Italian.
Atmosphere at Maresco: 6/10
This restaurant lacks atmosphere. The interior has been decorated to a high standard, but is cold in Winter and the main window faces a row of bins. The tables outside have potential, but this is a windy corner in Winter. There is no ‘crowd’ here, it is normally empty, but there are a few Italian tourists with small appetites.
Service at Maresco: 7/10
The young wait staff keep changing, but are friendly enough. Obviously they get bored having little to do, but they try. The wine list is limited to the usual Italians, but they do have a Chablis at €45.
