Food at Amami: 16/20
This Northern hero is a place for Asian fusion at its best. As such it is forever locked in a battle with Tora for the title of āBest Asian on the Island,ā but while Tora leans to China, Amami favours Japan. The Japanese dim sum is a must, particularly the Prawn & Black Cod Gyoza at ā¬11.50 with ponzu Cream. There are also Pork Dumplings at ā¬10.90 with Thai Dipping Sauce, Wagyu Beef Gyoza at ā¬15.90 with shiitake and Truffle Soy, and wonderful mixed vegetable Yasai Gyoza at ā¬8.50. The summer rolls made of rice paper and served with a mango and coriander dip are also delicious, at ā¬9.50. Lots of good skewers from the Robata grill, particularly the prawns with satay sauce at ā¬16.90. Amongst the main courses, Miso Black Cod at ā¬38.50 is the absolute standout, served with Bok Choi and Togarashi. But there is also Duck Breast at ā¬24.50, complemented by Orange Miso and Spiced Carrot, and an excellent Steamed Seabass at ā¬26.50, accompanied by Butter Ponzu, Shimeji, Asparagus, and Cherry Tomatoes. The āaddonsā are the trick here. Miso Glazed Iberico Pork at ā¬23.90, is paired with Foie Gras Miso and Pickled Cucumber while Yuzu Kosho Baby Chicken at ā¬23.50 is finished with Honey Gochujang.
Atmosphere at Amami: 8/10
This is a staple for those who live in the North of the Island (Southerners complain you might as well fly to Rome). It certainly is a long, long, drive from Valletta, so maybe only consider it if you are based in the North. Certainly donāt try getting here in a Bolt between 5pm and 7pm. At weekends, the restaurant is upmarket, smart and buzzy, with a mixture of well healed locals and expats. It feels a bit like you are in LA. Midweek evenings can be dead, particularly in Winter. There are big glass windows with a view of the Med.
Service at Amami: 8/10
The service is of a high standard here, and deeply knowledgeable, indeed proud, of the great food they are serving. You will never have to pour your own wine, which is right as the bottles arenāt cheap. For those on a budget the best bet is a lesser Italian or the Verdejo in the high twenties. There is a Chablis at ā¬45. There are some lovely reds in the ā¬50-80 range including a St. Ćmilion with a few years on it. There are also much higher priced wines for the private equity crowd to feel happy.
