Food at Port 21: 14/20
The RMYC was founded in 1835 so is steeped in history. It shares its kitchen and menu with Port 21. This is a good place to have a salad on a hot day. A Chicken Caesar for €13,90, or maybe a Caprese for €10,90. The pasta dishes are good as well - Ravioli con Gamberi & Aragosta at 14.90 ( homemade ravioli with prawns & lobster, white wine, cherry tomatoes), Spaghetti con Pesce Alla Puttanesca (spaghetti with fresh fish, olives, capers & anchovies) at €13,90, or Linguine ai Gamberi & Zucchini at €16,90 (linguine pasta, prawns, courgettes & bisque). There’s not a lot of new dishes amongst the main courses. The usual fish at 60 a kilo. A ribeye at 25.90, a veal cutlet at 24.90. Thank God they have lots of daily specials.
Atmosphere at Port 21: 8/10
Members of the RMYC tell me the two establishments attract very different clientele, but I am never sure about that. A lot of locals and expats in both. Somewhat nautically dressed, they own yachts after all, or at least in resort clothes. The terrace is wonderful for lunch on sunny days in winter, and for dinner in the summer.
Service at Port 21: 7/10
The staff are mainly south and east Asian. They are generally polite and efficient-ish but it is a good idea to keep your eye on them. The wine list is surprisingly limited and there are no vintages listed – you’d think the yacht owners would want to know – but I usually manage to find something having driven the wait staff crazy asking what year is this and what year is that.
