Our Review of De Mondion, Mdina
Food at De Mondion: 20/20
High level cooking doesn't get better than this. Take out a mortgage and go for it. After all, the prices are well below London or New York. Chef Clint Grech is a Maltese boy who has taken his art form to new heights. It is rooted in the high quality organic produce produced by the famous Xara Gardens. There are two menus at €115 and €145, but beware the many supplements. You proceed at a leisurely pace. Don't scoff too much of the local sourdough bread Xara with delicious gardens olive oil or butter from Brittany, it's hard not to, but really you mustn't. This is followed by the 'Tribute to the Mediterranean Sea' which is beautifully presented and flavoricious, the 'Xara Garden Barigoule' showcases the organic fresh produce, and then a divine 'Agnolotti' of Oxtail with 'Bahrija' Onions is perfectly executed. There is a local line-caught 'Seabass a la Plancha' with hispi cabbage, cauliflower and Sauce Béarnaise. But Clint's pièce de résistance is his Pigeon from 'Bresse' with Xara Beetroot and smoked Cherry. This is presented to the table with appropriate 'ahs,' and is just right. Desserts evoke 'Childhood Memories'. All in all, it is a feast fit for a king, at least one who has recently had some good luck in the markets.
Atmosphere at De Mondion: 7/10
This is a Michelin starred restaurant so of course it is beautifully appointed, but the inside space in Winter does feel a bit like an attic room, albeit lushly done. A bit like the ones you find in Chelsea or Knightsbridge by those clinging to prosperity. The main action is the terrace on summer evenings. The crowd is obviously well heeled, or at least able to spend money for the experience. Largely visitors with a sprinkling of locals. The noise level is good.
Service at De Mondion: 9/10
Impeccable service from this highly honed team of professionals. Miljan Radonjic is the top sommelier, previously at Bahia, and he certainly knows his stuff. He won the Michelin Guide award for 2026. The wine list is highly priced as you would expect, but to give him his credit we did manage to find a reasonable Chablis at €70, and a decent red for €80. There are also less expensive options for those who are understandably stretched by the prices.
