Food at The Seafood Market: 14/20
There are three arguments for this restaurant. Fish, fish and ....fish. If you are a meat eater then don’t even think about it. But the fish really is very fresh and good, though quite simply prepared. This is a long way from creative Michelin style cooking, though Asian and Latin twists do creep in to tempt you. Starters include Thai Marinated Prawn Salad at €18, Dublin Bay Scallop ‘Tiradito’ at €18, Local Fish ‘Tiradito’ at €22, and Tuna Tataki at €22, when they have it. There are normally different ceviche at €19, again depending on season. Tempura Kind Prawns at €25 are very well executed, but really you should choose whichever fish looks best, most especially the catch of the day at market price. There is also shellfish, but the half lobster at €29 whilst extremely tasty was also extremely tiny - the smallest one I have ever had. And five langoustines at €38 are unlikely to fill you up either. So stick to the fish!
Atmosphere at The Seafood Market: 6/10
This place has no street number – just look for the giant octopus symbol. If you long for the old style fish and chip shops, then this is the place for you. Bare floors, bare tables with paper napkins, bare tiled walls… this is not the venue to bring an interiors snob, as unfortunately I did. And yet the well-healed local crowd seem to love it, in the way Park Avenue used to go slumming in Harlem. They are here ‘air kissing’, together with confused tourists with their children. It is buzzy, but thankfully, despite the hard surfaces, not too loud.
Service at The Seafood Market: 8/10
Service is very competent here, delivered with enthusiasm by the largely Filipino wait staff. The wine list is surprisingly broad, even if they have fallen for the silly descriptors rather than simply dividing it by country. How on earth can an Albarino Atlantis (at €39) be described as “aromatic”, let alone a Pecorino (at €45), but then again I suppose all wine is. So what’s the point? Why is a Roero Arneis at €35 ‘round and medium bodied?’ It’s like one of those Tristan Tzara ‘poems’ where he would cut up words in newspapers, shake them in a bag, and then read out in a random order. Prices are also a bit like that at the higher end. A Chablis Grand cru for €129 seems fair enough, but would you really pay €220 for a white Chateauneuf du Pape? I’d go for the Vespa at €55.
