Our Review of Roman's Den, Rabat
Food at Roman's Den: 14/20
This place has to be experienced to be believed. It is great fun, with the added advantage that it opens later than most local restaurants, so very useful if you are going to a classical music concert in the church. Dishes are classics that will appeal to British and American traditionalists. Smoked salmon at €12, avocado and prawn salad and chef’s pate both at €11. All of them are very well done and to be recommended. There are plenty of pasta dishes of course, and some chicken classics like cordon bleu at €23 and chasseur at €20. But people really come here for the grills. Lamb or pork chops at €26 and €20, and lots of good steaks, sirloin, T bone, and Rib Eye for €27, and filet priced according to the market. Various sauces available. Explain in detail what you want when you say “medium rare” etc, as the Maltese often have a different idea to Americansa sto what that means exactly, let alone the Frenchies.
Atmosphere at Roman's Den: 6/10
This is a windowless basement, so not ideal if you are claustrophobic or in search of glamour. But it does have a welcome traditional vibe. The crowd is mainly older visitors, and a few locals, casually dressed. The noise level is good.
Service at Roman's Den: 8/10
If you are a fan of the British series ‘Fawlty Towers’ then this is the place for you. Not because things go wrong, but because the owner, Daniel, is the most wonderful character. You may at times feel that he is having dinner with you. He first thought of calling it the “Lion’s Den.” And if things do go off the rails, they do so in the most delightful way. There was a bargain on the wine list and he told me “of course we don’t have any of that left” and offered me a completely different wine from a different country, but quite rightly saying “if you like upscale wine then this is the only one we’ve got at present you’d like.” I was surprised there wasn’t an entertainment charge on the bill.
