Food at Rogatino (Rogantino's): 14/20
Rogantino’s is named after the owner’s great grandfather, and it is a very special place. You come here for the suckling pig and that is exactly what you must have. This also means you must be a group of at least ten people, and booking ahead is mandatory. The suckling pig is indeed delicious and juicy, and is served with some salad sides and proceeded with a choice of starters on an ad hoc basis. The set price is €25 each, but with everything added in and a huge amount of wine it came out as €180 for two of us. I am told they have other dishes such as roast lamb, and different game by arrangement, and of course they are also a wedding venue for those seeking this country feel.
Atmosphere at Rogatino (Rogantino's): 7/10
You almost feel like you are not in Malta when you come here, not least as the drive beyond Rabat seems to be taking you further than ever seemed possible on this little Island. Don’t even dream of letting your Bolt driver drop you at the Mdina gates, as ours suggested. You will be in for a cross country hike of several hours! It may be a palazzo, but it feels like a country Inn, and indeed on a wintry afternoon I had the impression we were in the Scottish highlands, albeit in summer. This was further exacerbated by the animal heads on the stone walls, and bare flagstones on the floor. In the warmer months, I imagine the garden must provide very different options.

The wait staff are friendly and efficient given what they are dealing with. The lovely little bar at the entrance has an incredible collection of whiskies (more highland feel). There is a good selection of inexpensive wines as you would expect.
