Food at Radici Malta: 15/20
The cuisine is the best of Italian in this Milano-feeling restaurant. It is also inventive in terms of flavours, and beautifully presented. Amongst the antipasti ,the uovo in camicia (poached egg served over a parmesan foam, topped with truffle infusion crumble and fresh black truffle) at €16, is excellent, the tartare di filetto (beef tartare) topped with mustard ice-cream at €18 is also interesting. There is a polpo scottato (seared octopus) served with chickpea cream at €22 and a straightforward vitello tonnato at €16. But for me the standout is the parmigiana at €14 (layers of crispy eggplant, tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese and basil) it is both delicious and beautifully presented. There are plenty of good pasta dishes, of course, such as spaghetto cozze, limone e peperoncino (pastificio gentile spaghetti served with fresh mussels, lemon zest and red chili) at €20, nonna mela tortelli (homemade pork tortelli) with pumpkin cream and olive powder at €26, or pasta corta with beef cheek and ragusano cheese fondue at €21. The spaghetto burro e tartufo at €25 with fresh black truffle is of course delicious. There is also an interesting risotto alla barbabietola (acquerello rice with beetroots, goat cheese, walnuts and lemon zest) at €25. The main courses are more straightforward, a fish of the day and steaks according to availability. A very good veal on the bone at €110 a kilo. Sides and sauces are charged separately.
Atmosphere at Radici Malta: 6/10
Understated, Radici is tucked away in a side street of Valletta, and quite easy to miss if you don’t know where you are going. This is a small restaurant divided into two rooms, quite plainly decorated, perhaps a bit lacking in oomph. The crowd is a mixture of visitors and locals, the latter quite smartly dressed. The noise level is good, if anything too quiet.
Service at Radici Malta: 8/10
The boss here works hard, and is friendly and knowledgeable about the food and the wine. The wine list is highly priced, for Malta if not for London/New York, and sadly underpowered outside the Italian wines. Even a simple Roero Arneis is €45, but there is a good Idda from Gaja is €80. There is also a very serviceable Barolo for €80. More good quality French wines for under €100 would be much appreciated.
