Rubino Malta: Traditional Maltese and Italian, Mediterranean in Valletta

Traditional Maltese and Italian, Mediterranean · Valletta, Malta

Our Review of Rubino, Valletta

Food at Rubino: 15/20

The original Rubino was a Sicilian confectionery shop opened in 1906 by Vincenzo Rubino, a sweet maker from Palermo. The Diacono family took over in 2008, and Edward is now hard at work in the kitchen. The menu is very much Maltese, and changes daily, though many dishes are regulars. Amongst the starters, Aljotta the traditional Maltese soup at €9.00, Neonati (sprats) at €11.00, Smoked In-House Octopus served on a carrot purée at €12.00, Orecchiette Maltese sausage and 'Nduja at €13.50, and Spaghetti Bottarga (fish eggs) at €19.00. Main courses include Tagliata Di manzo at €32.00, Pork fillets honey and thyme at €24.00 and Vitella Milanese on the bone €35.00. Because this is Valetta there of course is rabbit.

Atmosphere at Rubino: 7/10

On one of the quieter streets of Valletta, Rubino is a special place. The restaurant is spread over three floors, one at ground level, and then the other two below. The kitchen is on the middle floor. The experience is somewhat different on all three. This is a favourite of the locals and you will find them here. Noise level is generally good.

Service at Rubino: 7/10

The service is firm but good here. Make sure you understand each of the Maltese dishes in detail. The wine list is excellent, though sometimes misdescribed (the language can be flowery). There are some real finds on the list if you are prepared to pay up, some of them at good prices. But I shall avoid specifying here as last time I did that they put the price up 40%!
