Food at LOA: 16/20
Aki has a Latina cousin and she hangs out on the St. Paul's waterfront. Loa's menu celebrates South American cuisine in all its rich diversity with an exciting selection of dishes with roots in Argentina, Chile, Peru, and Mexico. The Japanese influence in Latin America is also part of the fun. The best approach is to get a wide selection of different dishes and combine grazing with sharing. The spicy tuna Uramaki (€12.50) is good, as is the shrimp Futomaki at €14.50, both of which come with a black wasabi (green is just so ordinary these days don't you know). Guacamole has authentic Pico De Gallo Plantain Chips at € 9.90, while the fish tacos (lampuki) are served with smoked aioli and sesame slaw at €5.50 each. The lampuki is deep fried which seems a little like doubling up on the carbs. The "crudo & Nikkei" are to be recommended – especially the Ceviche experience which is a great way to taste the best varieties of this Latin marinated raw fish dish. Four very different ones, each excellent, and while €39.90 seemed a lot it is enough for four people. The quinoa salad at €8.90 is highly recommended, as are the pollo a la brasa (grilled chicken) at €23.50 and the Iberico Pressa Pork at €31.50, though be warned this comes pink. All in all a great culinary tour of a continent.
Atmosphere at LOA: 8/10
The restaurant's identity "pays homage to two elements found in South American cultures, namely the ancient Río LOA—Chile's longest river which spans over 440km—and the fascinating LOAs goddesses, each of whom offers protection and counsel in return for ritual service expressed through sacred rhythms, songs, and dance"... crikey. This did translate into a fire dancer the night we were there, and there's no questioning this place has Latin vibes. The crowd is well heeled and youngish, with the odd adventurous tourist. Sadly too many birthday celebrations, a common risk in buzzy places these days. Noise level is medium to high – do not come here for a quiet chat. The architecture is quite something. The interior, by Jestico & Whiles, draws on Brazilian Modernism: clean, functional lines are softened with warm natural materials such as cane, leather and wood, plus geometric timber panelling and graphic wall partitions. A statement dark green marble bar anchors the space, while a large marbled watercolour mural depicts the LOA goddesses. Floor to ceiling glass windows give panoramic views of St Paul's Bay and the islands. Outside, an extensive terrace extends the dining room toward the sea, creating a relaxed, resort like flow between indoor and al fresco areas.
Service at LOA: 8/10
With all the buzz going on quiet souls will get ignored. You don't exactly have to fight for attention, but you need to keep on their case. With this firm approach, service is then friendly and efficient. The wine list is the same at Aki's so don't expect lots of bargains, but there is a serviceable Domaine Hamalin Chablis at €45 and an excellent Pomerol Chateau Chantallouetta 2018 at €85.90. The decanters have to be seen to be believed. All part of the fun. The cocktail menu is designed to appeal to the youngsters, and especially for those who have a lot of time on their hands. It'll take you half an hour to work out what you want. Obviously they come with the foam, steam and light effects this audience expects.
