Our Review of Nan Yuan, Valletta (Waterfront)

Food at Nan Yuan: 14/20

It is a truth universally acknowledged that Malta is in need of a good Chinese restaurant. Nan Yuan will scratch your Chinese food itch in a straightforward and simple way, without shooting the lights out. Regulars of Chinatowns in the large cities of Northern Europe may be a little disappointed. The cuisine is Cantonese, with the odd confusing Asian fusion influence, and the menu is huge. Indeed there are so many dishes we can only give you a handful in the space we have here. Starters are the usuals – spring rolls, shrimp dumplings, wontons, plus samozas (?!) all at €8.25. In addition, there are salt and pepper chicken wings at €8.95, and chicken or beef satays at €9.50. Among the main courses, there is chicken and cashew nuts at €13.95, and stir-fried pork with celery at €13.85. Prices are generally good but King Prawns with garlic sauce is €23.50 for some reason and the bill always creeps up. They also have steamed fresh fish (just check it is cooked through properly), and aromatic duck at €39.50. You can see the ducks being fed on quiet days which might put the squeamish off.

Atmosphere at Nan Yuan: 7/10

Outside you are right by the cruise ships, and the extent of your view depends on whether there is a ship in, or not. Still who can complain about eating outside in Winter. Inside is traditional Chinese décor, a step above some of the others in Malta. The crowd is surprisingly much more local than tourist. Very busy for lunch on Sunday. The noise level is otherwise good.

Service at Nan Yuan: 7/10

‘Lee’ the owner keeps this place on the rails, assisted by some helpers. Unlike many Chinese places they do have a proper wine list, and they even have champagne – Moet Chandon at €75. The usual Italians (Pecorino, Pinot grigio, Greco di Tufo) are in the hight twenties, there is a Sancerre and a Chablis at €38, a premier cru from Vaillons is just €65. And there is an Amarone for just €54, and two Barolos in the sixties. A Saint Emilion Grand Cru classe is just €53. No wonder the Maltese families love it here for a Sunday lunch.
