Food at GOLDEN Fork: 18/20
Letitzia, the chef at this wonderful restaurant in Rabat, recently won the title of Best Chef in the World at a tournament in Dubai, and her cooking is certainly remarkably inventive and high standard. The prices also are extremely reasonable, perhaps because the Michelin Guide has yet to award her one star. Surely only a matter of time. The seven course tasting menu is €110 and changes every so often. Recent highlights include Foie Gras Meringue, Slow Cooked Gozo Octopus, and Cloud Caramelized Brioche. New dishes are regularly added, some of which become new favourites. She particularly likes to explore a meat or vegetable done in several different ways, by her highly trained team in the kitchen.
Atmosphere at GOLDEN Fork: 8/10
Housed in a large old house in the middle of Rabat down an alleyway, this restaurant is slightly difficult to find, but well worth the effort. The high level of cooking means that the Chef deliberately limits the number of covers, so don’t be surprised if it appears half full. Noise level is therefore low. The crowd is dedicated food lovers who are prepared to venture beyond the tourist beehive that is Valletta.

Service is led by the chef’s partner ably assisted by a number of Nepalese ladies who provide friendly and nannyish service. Obviously with cooking at this level, if you opt for the seven courses expect a meal of at least three hours, maybe four, and many bottles. The wine is well priced and contains many options that are reasonable, including a good Chablis at just €30
