Trabuxu Malta: Italian and Mediterranean bistro in Valletta

Our Review of Trabuxu, Valletta
Food at Trabuxu: 13/20
Something of a tradition in Valletta, this bistro offers straight forward Maltese and Italian dishes. Amongst starters, the Vitello Tonnato at €16.95 is a little bland, you’re better off with the chicken liver parfait with homemade chutney at €14.95, or Local Fish Tartare at €16.95. There are Rabbit Croquettes (this is Valletta) for €15.95. There are lots of pasta dishes such as homemade Cappelletti with fontina & ricotta and toasted pine nuts at €18.95, served al dente, but they need a bit more oomph. The business men dining stick to the steaks, and you should probably do the same. Veal Ribeye with lemon beurre blanc is €32.95, a Fillet of Beef with red pepper & marjoram relish is €32.95, and Braised Beef Ribs with roasted onion and toasted chilli almonds is € 29.95.
Atmosphere at Trabuxu: 7/10
This is a bistro tucked away in South Street in Valletta, a small cozy, traditional Maltese restaurant. There are chequered tablecloths and a wooden floor. At lunchtime it is a little dark, but perhaps that is welcome in summer. The noise level is good. A favourite place for locals, notably civil servants and politicians who work nearby in the offices at lunchtime. Tourist walk-ins may be disappointed if they haven’t booked. Avoid the table by the door on chilly days in Winter.
Service at Trabuxu: 8/10
Krista and Kris Fenech Soler offer a friendly welcome, particularly for regulars, and the young assistants fill in the gaps. The wine list is good, and prices not bad for Valetta. You can get a Spanish Verdejo for just €26, and a Gavi di Gavi or a Greco di Tufo for €36. Amongst the French, a Sancerre ‘Grand Reserve’ – Henri Bourgeois and a Chablis ‘Domaine de Vivieres’ are both €55, with half bottles available at €26. A Pouilly Fumé ‘En Travertin’ – Henri Bourgeois is €60. The reds are a treat. A Château Nardou Bordeaux is only €34, and there are two Margaux from Schröder & Schÿler both at just €58 . Also good value are two Saint-Émilion Grand Crus the Château Tour de Peyreau and the Château La Bonelle both at €45.
