Our Review of La Majoli (Le Majoliche), St Julian's

Food at La Majoli (Le Majoliche): 14/20

There is a strong Sicilian side to the Maltese food scene, and Le Majoliche is part of this wave. This means it goes beyond the usual Italian offerings with some original starter dishes such as Soufflè ai Porcini con Fonduta di Parmigiano Reggiano (Souffle with Porcini Mushrooms with Parmesan Fondue) at €16 and Involtini di Pesce Spada (Swordfish Rolls) at €17, alongside the inevitable bruschetta and Caponata Siciliana at €13. There are also some interesting pasta dishes from land and sea with Fettuccine Majoliche (Home-Made Fettuccine with Clams, Shrimps and Prawns Tartare) at €28 and Tortellacci Neri Con Granchio, Astice E Zucchine (Black Ink Stuffed Pasta with Crab Lobster and Courgettes) at €25. Main courses are more straightforward – a lot of the usual suspects at the fish counter (tuna, salmon, swordfish, and seabass) most of which are at €23. And then lots of beef dishes for those craving meat such as a very good Tagliata Di Manzo Con Rucola, Grana E Pomodorini (Beef Tagliata with Rocket, Parmesan and Cherry Tomato) at €28. A sad lack of other meats or poultry however. Overall pricing is fair for this level of restaurant.

Atmosphere at La Majoli (Le Majoliche): 7/10

Le Majoliche lives up to its promise of “Sicilian elegance in the heart of St Julians” and claims to “shine with contemporary elegance and an authentic Italian soul. Every detail speaks of home, beauty, and the essence of Sicily.” A large majoliche mural hangs on the left of the entrance, frankly there could be more. The restaurant is built in modern style, and stretches over two floors with half the tables on an upper mezzanine level. There is a large glass window and some potted plants that give a slight conservatory feel. The upmarket crowd is dominated by locals, though some tourists obviously find their way here. It feels buzzy without but clubby, a frequent risk in this part of Town.

Service at La Majoli (Le Majoliche): 7/10

The waiters feel like they have been hand picked for their Sicilian charm and dash, and generally keep the show on the road. The team are overseen by the owners (noticeable in designer chic) and you are never far from a cocktail. The wine list is not enormous, and not particularly Sicilian, but there is a good selection of middle ranking Italian wines again with all the usual suspects - Tombacco Pecorino (Abruzzo) and Fina Kebrilla Grillo (Sicilia) La Scolca Gavi Di Gavi Cortese (Piemonte), Pescaja Roero Arneis (Piemonte), Orneta Greco Di Tufo (Campania) all in the high twenties/low thirties price range. The reds go slightly higher with Giusti Amarone Corvina, Molinara, Rondinella (Veneto) standing out.
