Our Review of Wigi, St Julian's (Balluta Bay)
Food at Wigi: 14/20
This is something of a Maltese institution, and a venue determined to keep its feel as a family restaurant. Chefs Neil and Clayton, together with the patriarch of the family Louis-(Wigi) head the kitchen. The restaurant claims “the family environment encourages every member of the Wigi’s team to continually innovate and develop ingredient-focused dishes, creating a contemporary yet diverse Mediterranean bistro menu whilst maintaining classic favourites.” The emphasis is on quality meat rather than price, or what you do to it. What you will find is that this is a traditional if upmarket Maltese steak place. Which steaks changes daily, but examples would be Argentinian grain fed Sirloin served carved with mushroom fricassee and crispy polenta at €35, or a Char grilled Irish beef fillet with a pomme puree, and spinach at €36, or pistachio crusted veal medallions, porcini cream €32. There are normally some other meats for non-beef eaters such as pan seared duck breast with beer & ginger glaze, sweet potato puree and pak choy €26, or slow cooked lamb rump, root vegetables €28. And some fresh fish, but that would not really be the point of Wigi’s. Starters are dominated by simple classics such as baked beef & caramelized onion tart tatin garnished with crème fraiche, Aubergine parmigiana, or Duck & foie gras terrine, all at €13. Puddings are also classics – sticky toffee or apple crumble at €7.
Atmosphere at Wigi: 6/10
This small, forts floor restaurant is beloved by well healed Maltese and you will find them here in force air kissing to each other. It feels a bit like a private club. There are also a few older expat locals. The room is crowded and has a low ceiling, perhaps too low. In consequence the noise level is quite high. The kitchen is open to the room which adds to the buzz, and to the noise. If you sit near the kitchen it can be a bit smoky.
Service at Wigi: 7/10
As part of the family feel, Bepe is normally front of house, and a lovely French lady. They provide competent and friendly service, but we have experienced longueurs on busy nights. Of course you can get a good negroni here. Otherwise the wine list is good with plenty of good things to chose from. Prices are as you would expect. That stick toffee pudding deserves a bottle of Sicilian pudding wine – Cielo d’Alcamo at €45.
