Giannini Malta: Seafood-led Mediterranean and European in Valletta

Our Review of Giannini, Valletta
Food at Giannini: 14/20
This has been a staple of the Valletta dining scene for nearly forty years, and you can understand why. Chef Patron Aaron DeGiorgio offers a traditional cuisine of classics well done. For starters the thinly sliced oak smoked barbary duck breast with orange honey at €16 is a stand out, together with the pan seared quail breast with green asparagus and fig conserve also at €16. If you want a bigger portion there are also quails with raisins for a main course at €24, although perhaps Aaron's best dish is his Veal Saltimbocca at €26. There are three different Black Angus beef dishes at €34, served with herb butter and a couple of other interesting sauces – fresh tomato and oregano or whisky, as well as a duck breast at €28 which comes with orange, cinnamon and blueberries.
Atmosphere at Giannini: 8/10
This is not the easiest restaurant to find, tucked away in a small square at the Floriana end of Valletta. But it is worth seeking out. Not least for the excellent view from the windows towards Sliema. It tends to be on the quiet side, but has an old fashioned charm. What bliss to have napkins rather than paper serviettes! It is definitely not for fashion-seeking teeny boppers. The crowd is mainly loyal locals and a few discerning visitors. An ideal place for romantic sunset suppers, or Sunday lunch with your Mother.
Service at Giannini: 7/10
The welcome at the entrance downstairs is not always as warm as it could be, but once your are upstairs, under Madame's watchful eye, all is well. The wine list is excellent, and well chosen, as you would expect at this classic grown ups' restaurant. Barolos, Amarones, an excellent Margaux in the fifties and a Jadot Puligny Montrachet at €100.
