Our Review of Tmun Gozo, Għajnsielem (Mġarr Harbour), Gozo

Food at Tmun Gozo: 17/20

Gozo can hold its head up high with this one star Michelin restaurant. Chef Paul Buttigieg watched his mother cook from an early stage and devoted himself to food at just sixteen. He has taken her tradition to a new level, and added an Asian twist. Prices are very good for this standard of cooking. Start with various snacks of two units each such as Thai fish sliders €5, or Panko tempura prawns with sweet & sour vegetable relish for €6. For starters, the day’s catch ceviche (leche de tigre, citrus gel, pickled onions) is simply outstanding at €12. There is also an interesting twist on the traditional foie gras parfait served with pork rillettes, pomegranate and dates at €16. For main courses there is a very wide choice to tempt you. The day’s catch Fish Trio with grilled calamari and king prawn is served with a delicious caper & raisin purée. It costs €35. There is an Asian-Style Calamari (with ginger, garlic, soy sauce, honey and coriander) for €25, while for meat lovers slow-cooked shoulder of lamb (ras el hanout) at €32 is to be recommended. Excellent deserts include a wicked apple tarte tatin with cinnamon ice cream at just €9. If you have the time, it is well worth considering the good value sharing menus. 7 plates at €110 (Per Couple), 9 plates at €135, and 12 plates at €170.

Atmosphere at Tmun Gozo: 7/10

This is a small restaurant situated close to the Mgarr port. It is not easy to find if you don’t know where to find it, so have your google maps at the ready. It is smart but relaxed, and with this level of cooking it is beloved by locals in the know. The noise level is good, so this is ideal for a romantic rendezvous, although for Sunday lunch there may be large family groups. There are few outside tables with a harbour view for what it’s worth.

Service at Tmun Gozo: 8/10

This is very much a family affair. Paul’s parents Jane and Leli Buttigieg were there one day we dined, no doubt keeping an eye on their legacy and their talented son. The staff are all very well trained and highly professional. The wine list is a delight – if I lived on Gozo I’d come every day just to enjoy it, let alone the food! These guys know there stuff. There is plenty to enjoy at under €40, and if you are after a treat then you are spoilt for choice. Champagnes at reasonable prices, rare in the Maltese islands such as Bollinger at €78, or even, for the well healed, the Dom Perignon 2008 at €250. There are many excellent whites some of which are real bargains. Sancerre Grande Réserve – Henri Bourgeois at €39, or Condrieu Les “Cassines” Paul Jaboulet Aîné at € 76. The reds showcase the very heights of Maltese wines, there are the usual Italian suspects, and some French delights. Consider the Château De Fieuzal 1996, Pessac-Leognan, Grand Cru Classé De Graves, at €75.
