Food at The Medina: 13/20
This hotel restaurant is great for private parties, but is also open for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays, and lunch on most days. The cooking is simple and some might say unadventurous. A chicken supreme at €26.50, or a fillet of beef at €34. Frequent diners might feel they have little choice. There are no specials, although the fish at €29.50 changes daily (for those who are not fished out) and there is a daily soup. I once tried the prawn bisque, smothered in so many croutons I could hardly see it, which was good, if unsalted. Another time the Baba Ganoush (aubergine dip) hit the spot. The pasta is cooked so al dente you might need a dentist. The veal ossobuco at €29.00 was Ok, but not outstanding.
Atmosphere at The Medina: 8/10
Nestled in the middle of the wonderful Medieval/Renaissance city of Mdina, this restaurant is somewhat hidden away, so check your map. Originally a Norman residence, the courtyard here is the attraction, with climbing plants and soft lighting. Less impressive are the wipe clean tables, and armless chairs. There is an inside space for those who want greater warmth – to be avoided if there are noisy children or babies. Inevitably the crowd is mostly tourists. The noise level is good.
Service at The Medina: 7/10
At lunch there is a very good Maitre D, but she was absent in the evening. The waiters are well trained but need careful watching. A simple request for salt (there was none on the table, and I was eating soup) took forever. The wine list is really disappointing. Lots of wines, but few great ones, and no listing of vintages or distinctions. There is a Gavi for €30 but the local Markus Divinus is €110. I had to query a simple Marques de Riscal because it was €85, but was told “no it is not a Riserva”. There are plenty from unheard of secondary locations, but I’d play safe. And celebration is difficult when Rothschild champagne is €200 a bottle. Address and contact info:
