Mamachi Malta: Japanese-Peruvian Nikkei, sharing plates in St Julian's (Portomaso)
Japanese-Peruvian Nikkei, sharing plates · St Julian's (Portomaso), Malta
Our Review of Mamachi, St Julian's (Portomaso)
Food at Mamachi: 16/20
The theme is a fusion between Japanese cuisine and Peruvian, though the emphasis is more on the former than the latter. Prices are high, and it is probably a good idea to avoid the Beluga at €110 for just 10g, or the Wagyu rib eye at €145. there are much more reasonable dishes to be had however, highlights are the sushi and sashimi with best value to be had from the platters such as the Umi platter offering 25 pieces at €54. The salmon skin kabayaki roll at €16 is lovely and the tempura are all excellent, with rock shrimps at €18 better than the half lobster at €45. On the meat side there are plenty of very good dishes. Chicken Truffle Teriyaki at €24 stands out as does a juicy Lamb rack at €40, and the crispy pork belly at €16.
Atmosphere at Mamachi: 9/10
Do you like Peruvian drums playing during dinner? Well then this is the place for you. This bustling restaurant cans sometimes feel halfway between a nightclub and a live floorshow, but then that’s why the upbeat crowd is here. This is definitely not the place for a quiet chat. The crowd is largely tourists and expats with some local businessmen. The décor is modern and trendy.
Service at Mamachi: 6/10
Some excellent waiters but it can be hard to get attention over the noise, and you have to keep on top of them if you don’t want your wine to come out slowly. Wine prices are generally high . the cheapest champagne is €130, but there are some bargains to be had compared to London or New York, such as a Sancerre at €52. Dishes arrive when they are ready, so sit back and enjoy the fun.
