Food at San Giuliano: 14/20
Classic highly competent traditional Italian cooking here. There are some well executed starters such as a good Parmigiana di Melanzane at €15.50 and a Carpaccio di Polpo (octopus) with Fennel & Rocket salad at €16.50. But the best idea is to head for the pastas, and share one as an appetizer if you have a small appetite. The Linguine al Limone (Linguine with grated Lemon Zest, Saffron, Basil & Parmesan Cheese) at €17.50 is a house special, and the Ravioli Cacio e Pepe at €20.50, is rich and well done. The Frutti di Mare Maltagliati (flat pasta with calamari, mussels & clams, fresh tomato, white wine & olive oil) at €19.50, and the Spaghetti alla Palermitana (Anchovies, tomato sauce, roasted pine nuts, fennel, sultanas, breadcrumbs & garlic) at €17.50, are lighter and both delicious. For main courses there is a lot of fresh fish at only €30.50 a kilo, and the Spigola al Sale (Baked Sea Bass in Salt Crust served off the Bone) at €29.50 is excellent. There are lots of good meat dishes like Saltimbocca alla Romana Veal escalope cooked in white wine with San Daniele ham & sage at €29.50, Carré d’Agnello alla Romana Grilled (rack of lamb marinated with garlic, rosemary & butter) at €31.50, and Lombata di Vitella da Latte alla Griglia o Milanese (Milk Fed Veal Loin grilled or pan-fried with Seasoned Breadcrumbs) at €29.50.
Atmosphere at San Giuliano: 8/10
This is a smart, old style Italian restaurant that channels that Portofino feel. Overlooking Spinola Bay in St Julian's, it has windows on three sides so everyone gets a view, even if its not the very best of bays in Malta. This is a favourite for the upmarket locals, and expats. It can be quite dressy at weekends, except for the odd tourist who wanders in. It can also be quite hard to find for newcomers. Wander down the ramp on the North of Spinola Bay and into the Fisherman’s Promenade. The restaurant is inside on the left, accessed by a lift.
Service at San Giuliano: 8/10
The wonderful old owner is often present looking grand, and will tell you his life story if prompted. The head waiter is very professional here and he whips his team into shape. Service is at a high level. The wine list has lots of good Italian wines priced slightly above average for Malta but still miles below the equivalent restaurants in London or New York. The ordinary Italian whites are in the thirties, that’s euros not gold bars.
