Food at AcquaBlu: 14/20
I am always struck how high the quality of the food is at the main Senglea restaurants and this is certainly true here. The cuisine is Italian seaside. As well as the usual fish sold by the weight, there are some less common dishes on the standard menu such as veal livers cooked with onions. But the best dishes tend to be the fresh daily specials which are priced according to the market, but reasonably priced. There is normally a squid's ink pasta, perhaps with stracciatella and lemon zest and mint, sometimes a beef ravioli. If you are lucky there is a fish caponata, and if they have them the fresh scallops gratinee come highly recommended. The seabass puttanesca on the regular menu is also an interesting twist on the normal fish dishes in Malta. There are plenty of deserts to choose from. Some are as expected such as canoli at just €7.50, some are quite inventive such as coffee/toffee panna cotta at €7.50 and a tart of ricotta fruti di bosco (forest fruits) at €8.
Atmosphere at AcquaBlu: 8/10
This is another one of the Senglea waterfront restaurants benefitting from the fabulous views across to Birgu from its terrace. In Winter punters retreat inside where there are two areas, the front so you have the feeling of being outside, the back so that you are guaranteed warmth. The crowd is mainly visitors with a few locals. Noise level is good.
Service at AcquaBlu: 8/10
Friendly and efficient service from the team here, with the manager keeping a watchful eye. There is a good wine list, though the "cellar selection" at the front is not well priced. €75 for a Pouilly Fuisse, and the white Chateauneuf du Pape is €125. The pricing seems out of balance with the rest of the list, thank God, where the usual suspects of Gavis and Grillos etc can be found in the thirties, and a Pinot Grigio is only €26.
