Food at Onda Blu: 15/20
This is a great place for fresh fish and also fresh seafood, served in the Italian style. One of the few restaurants in Malta that has live lobsters. The menu is large and filled with all the maritime delights you could wish for. A wide selection of antipasti, such as a tuna tartare at €20. The seafood pastas are very good, especially the fettucine Cacio e pepe with prawns and langoustines, the fettucine Ricci (with sea urchins), or the black squid’s ink linguine with raw local prawns all at €25. For main courses you should have fresh fish or seafood and choose it yourself. The fish are normally €70 a kilo (enough for two), the price of the lobsters varies depending on the market. There are other options such as a good mixed fish grill at €28, and an excellent breaded swordfish at €25.
Atmosphere at Onda Blu: 8/10
A lovely situation here, right on one of the smaller marinas in Floriana (beware Google maps sometimes gets the location wrong). Large glass windows on the side of the restaurant give you the feeling you are sitting on the water which is perfect on a sunny but chilly winter day. In the summer, Onda Blu now has a terrace where you can sit outside. The crowd is mainly Maltese fish lovers. Occasionally there can be a quite noisy group. A real Maltese Riviera restaurant.
Service at Onda Blu: 7/10
The waiters are friendly, but need a firm hand. Cocktails will sit on the bar unserved unless you keep your eye out. The wine list is dominated by Italian whites, most of them in the €25 to €45 category, and plenty of prosecco such as a Bellavista Cuvee Franciacorta at €50. There are some French delights for those with bigger wallets, not least an excellent Meursault at €100. Address and contact info:
